it's funny...it's sexy...it ain't pretty
Danny, a scientist cum writer of romance novels who is comically clueless when it comes to romancing real women is encouraged to find his mojo online, through sex chat rooms. The best ones for his purpose, however, turn out to be
the ones for bi-sexual women, one-on-one, so he creates the female online personna
of Karen to infiltrate them. Karen is way good at seducing women, and Danny is enthralled
by her. Being Karen eventually takes over Danny's life. Karen even falls in love with one of
her online paramoors, Jenny. In order to get his life back, Danny must reveal himself to
Jenny as the man behind the mask. Things don't end well.
LOL - written by Tony Sportiello, directed by Jerry Less - was first produced
at the WorkShop for two weeks in July of 2003 in the Jewel Box Theater,
then opened on the Mainstage on September 10th and played through October 2nd, 2004
to the following reviews:
"brutal honesty and sharp wit in Tony Sportiello's perverse tribute
to love, LOL examines the romantic life of Danny, an average Joe played by
Richard Kent Green...there is one reason to see this play...
acting, acting, acting...trust me, it is just that good...
if the promise of great acting is not enough to convince you to see LOL...
there is always the sex."
- Sarah Bolson, OffOffOnline.com
"...played to perfection by Richard Kent Green...the scenes where
Danny first goes online are both hilarious and bittersweet, staged
with just the right balance of anarchy and desperation by director
Jerry Less...LOL morphs from a jolly romantic comedy to a supernatural/
psychological thriller...LOL is an intriguing exploration of the newest landscape
of relationships and sex...a good deal of fun...the entire cast is terrific...."

Danny: "There's going to be sex in this show...LOTS of sex. No nudity, but lots and lots of sex."
"the scenes where Danny first goes online are both hilarious and bittersweet...
played to perfection
by Richard Kent Green"
- Martin Denton, nytheatre.com |
Karen: "What celebrity would you most like to have sex with?"
"Karen is incredibly abusive while maintaining an innocence that is astonishingly charming and hilarious."

Karen: "I'll take little miss Sarah Michelle Geller!"
"...the entire cast is terrific." - Martin Denton, nytheatre.com |
Cast: "Buffy...ooooooh."
But if there is one reason to see this play, it can be summed up in three simple words:
acting, acting, acting (I know that is
actually one word said three times but
trust me, it is just that good).

Jenny: "Karen...what do you think happens when we die?"
"Anne Richardson gives a finely muted performance as the emotionally tormented and painfully shy Jenny." - Sarah Bolson,offoffonline.com |
