In the Spring of 2002, a fifth floor walk-up theater club on 42nd Street remastered itself into a powerful new force in the New York theater community. That summer, The WorkShop Theater Company (formerly known as The 42nd Street Workshop Theater Company - founded in 1994) became one of the pioneers of the new Off-Off Broadway scene in the Garment District when it moved into its current home on the fourth floor of 312 West 36th Street.
The company constructed two new spaces - the Jewel Box, a 30-seat theater for developing new works, and the 65-seat Main Stage. WorkShop members (writers, directors and actors) are committed to the development of theater as an art/craft and the commercial success of their work.
RKG began his relationship with the company in 2002 as a director, and was soon put on the WorkShop staff as a Production Supervisor, to oversee one Main Stage production per season. RKG headed the development of musical theater projects for the WorkShop for a year or so, and in April of 2006 became a full Producing Director.
He is also kept very busy as an actor and director.
The WorkShop is now headed by Artistic Directors Timothy Scott Harris and Elysa Marden. Executive Director Riley Jones-Cohen oversees the financial life of the WorkShop while Co-Producing Directors David M. Pincus and Scott C. Sickles, with the help of the 150+ members, volunteer staff and interns make sure everything gets done.
(The WorkShop's biggest ongoing project is a fundraising campaign to
ensure its long-term financial survival. If you can offer any help at all,
please go the WorkShop web site at the link below and stop by the
"Contribution" page. PayPal makes it easy to make a tax-deductible
donation by credit card.)
